Saisonstart 2015 für Dakini (Marina di Ragusa)

Was für einen Winter wir hatten. Ende Dezember gings kurz nach England um Weihnachten und Neujahrt dort zu feiern. Dann folgten schöne Wochen in der Schweiz. Ende Januar gings dann für eine wunderbare Woche nach Venedig. Jeder einzelne Tag war ein Höhepunkt in sich selbst. Angefangen von der Ankunft am Flugplatz Marco Polo zur Fahrt im Linienboot AliLaguna bis beinahe vor unser Hotel (Spendid Hotel) in der Nähe der Markus Platz. Wir wollen hier keinen weiteren Reiseführer publizieren, verweisen auf gute Internetseiten zur Geschichte und Kultur von Venedig. In Kürze: Venedig wurde zu unserer Lieblingstadt in Italien. Zugegeben: wir hatten tolles Wetter – kühl aber immer blauer Himmel. Dadurch relativ wenige Touristen (ausser ein paar tausend Japaner). Auch das Wasser war geruchsmässig nicht wahrnehmbar. Das Beste: die Preise waren dank Nebensaison im Normalbereich. Aber lassen wir nun die Bilder sprechen.

Helen: we’re coming to the end of 2014 and the beginning for 2015. With the approach of the festive season, we travelled to England for a special Christmas with the family at my sister’s place in NW England  – has it really been over 17 years since the extended family celebrated together. Wow!
In no time at all our visit was over and we travelled back to Switzerland to see the Swiss family plus stay with our dear friends Adrian & Caroline in Baden. 3 week whizzed by & then it was time to be off to Venice. First time for Helen. A treasure in Italy & not to be missed. Cool weather but sunny & so lucky no rain. A glorious time visiting museums, historical buildings, walking around the town & the water bus taking us up/down the canals. Such fun. Beware the cafes & prices – always take a cappuccino at the bar, not at a table – save on the extra euros just for the pleasure of ‘cuddling a table’ ….   Below a few photos showing some of the delights of Venice:

Der Februar war ein Monat zum vergessen… Regen, Kälte und viel Wind. Auch der März war nicht viel besser. Lesson learned: Wir werden diese beiden Monate nicht mehr auf dem Schiff verbringen solange wir in der Marina di Ragusa überwintern. Am 24. März ging Dakini zum ersten Mal in die Werft der Marina um die üblichen Wartungsarbeiten (Antifould, Polieren, GFK-Reparaturen, Anoden-Wechsel und Saildrive-Oelwechsel) machen zu lassen.

Helen: February back at MdR. The weather this past winter has not been so good, even the locals were complaining – cold, windy & rain, rain, rain. Despite our moans & groans however we fared far better than the family back in Switzerland or UK. Plenty of time to catch up with the latest films, playing cards with friends & catch up with the sewing projects.  We discovered Weathermax, a good alternative to Sunbrella & with this find a new hobby flourished with Helen teaming up with Debbie (off SY Walanthea) busily sewing winch covers. BBQ & full length outboard motor covers, dinghy chaps. protection on the davit etc etc – time to resurrect some of the old skills. More to follow in winter 2015  - ‘no rest for the wicked’. Marcel & Campbell quite impressed  with their ‘Admirals’ – we not just smart & pretty you know!




Während Dakini gut austrocknen konnte und die Arbeiten vorangingen mieteten wir mit unseren Freunden Campbell und Debbie (SY Walanthea) einen Mietwagen. Damit erkundeten wir den Ätna, die Marina von Riposto, Linguaglossa, Castiglione di Sicilia, Acireale (wo auch unser Hotel war), Aci Trezza und zum Abschluss das herrliche Riserva Naturale Vendicari (Noto).

Helen: this year we tried the marina yard services at MdR & organised for Dakini to be lifted out & serviced. As in all things there can be good news/bad news. This time the main drawback was the length of time for the yard to complete the service. However, we were very  fortunate to be able to stay on our friends? boat Amble & relax. With the bad weather the yard was behind in schedule; the locals it is fair to say are not quite so organized as the Swiss or Germans, so it took several weeks to catch up with all the contracts. Too long, but that’s how it goes.
With time on our hands, we hired a car & together with Debbie & Campbell enjoyed the delights of SE Sicily – a visit to Etna (boy was it very cold that day & windy!), stay over in Acrireale (a lovely town), meandered back to MdR via the coast visiting neighbouring towns along the way with a final stop at the nature reserve just outside Noto.



So verbrachten wir vergnügliche Tage bis Dakini wieder gewassert wurde. Glücklicherweise stellten uns Brett und Jane ihre SY Amble als Unterkunft zur Verfügung. So machte es uns nichts aus, dass Dakini beinahe vier Wochen in der Werft war. Der Wassermacher wurde soeben repariert und funktioniert dank zwei neuen Pumpen wie neu. Jetzt noch der Maschinen Service und die neue VHF-Antenne montieren (die alte wurde aus der Halterung und vom Kabel gerissen)… dann kann das Cruising (siehe Cruising Plan vom 1. März) losgehen. La dolce Vita!

Helen: At last Dakini has been returned to us & our preparation, jobs for the upcoming sailing season start in earnest. It never seems to stop. Finally we get through &  we’re off for the summer, first port of call the lovely Siracusa. So looking forward to cruising around the Ionian.
